This is a tranlsation of a letter (original Spanish version included below) signed by 34 people currently detained at Eloy Detention Center in AZ. According to ICE, 153 detained people at the facility have tested positive for COVID-19.

Eloy's current situation is quite worrisome and delicate.  I speak in the name of the nearly 1000 detainees who live in anguish and fear for our health and life. Since the crisis by the Corona Virus began, the staff and workers at this center thought themselves immune to the pandemic by ensuring us that everything here was under control.  As a result, today we can see a catastrophe, since the contagions and positive cases due to the dreaded disease that plagues the whole country and the whole world causing countless deaths is on the rise in this place.  We are not safe here and there are no even minimum preventive conditions to prevent spread and contagion.  In principle we were never provided with the protective and asepsis materials, we were only told that we should kept handwashing and the social distance between the interns, but the contagion came from the outside.

It wasn’t until a month ago that we were given the masks.  The chemicals for hygiene are scarce, they are not enough and to make them last longer, they are mixed with water.  Core Civic officers who care for us worked without protection, having contact with the infected detainees.

I'm on Bravo 100 and from my cell window I see male detainees being isolated by COVID 19 in Alpha block.  There are over 10.  I see the men in their protective uniforms who take care in that isolation unit and then they are the same ones they take care in the other units.  So far there have been no cases but we know that this is a time bomb.

I can also see the ambulance several times in the day and the detainees stationed in Alpha that they are taking are no longer returning.  The only building that is not infected by COVID 19 is the building of Bravo, but we are at high risk of contagion because in these times, there is very few personnel to care for us in our tanks.   The same people who care for us when the time to count  the detainees comes, they go and count the others in the building that have people infected not using the necessary protection of the disease and then return again to our building, where we are exposed to the contagion of this terrible disease.  There are people vulnerable to the spread of such disease. The processes are very slow.  There are people who have already won their cases and can be released and yet they are still in custody here in the arrest center.

The food is extremely poor, its quality and quantity is terrible.  All detainees fear for our lives, we are very afraid of being infected by this disease and for these reasons we suggest to please help us.  It is said that there are more than 50 guards who tested positive and as many suspected of being infected by COVID 19.

".....we appreciate your help.   We want our voices to gi beyond our walls and bars where there are persons who struggle each day to survive in this harsh reality.   None of us imagined that we would be stripped of our liberty;  we are not criminals;  we only want protection, a hope for our life and the opportunity that we were denied in countries of our origin. !WE WANT TO LIVE!

La situación actual de Eloy es bastante preocupante y delicada.  Hablo en el nombre de los casi 1000 detenidos que vivimos angustiados y con temor por nuestra salud y vida. Desde quecomenzó la crisis por el corona virus el personal de trabajadores de este centro se pensó inmune a la pandemia asegurándonos que aquí todo estaba bajo control.  Como resultado, hoy podemos apreciar una catástrofe, ya que los contagios y casos positivos por la temida enfermedad que azotan a todo el pais y al mundo entero, están causando innumerables muertes y va en aumento en este lugar.  

Aquí no estamos seguros y tampoco existen las condiciones preventivas mínimas para evitar la propagación y el contagio.  En principio nunca nos facilitaron los materiales de proteccion y de asepsia, dieciéndonos sólo que mantuvieramos el lavado de manos y la distancia social entre las internas cuando el contagio venía del exterior.

Hasta hace un mes nos dieron los naso bucos. Los químicos para la  higiene escasean, no son suficientes y para que alcancen son mezclados con agua.  Los oficiales de Core Civic que nos cuidan trabajaban sin proteccion, teniendo contacto con los detenidos contagiados.

Estoy en Bravo 100 y desde la ventana de mi celda veo a los detenidos del sexo masculino que están aislados contagiados por COVID19 en el bloque de Alfa.  Son más de 10.  Veo a los señores con sus uniformes de protección que van a cuidar en esa unidad de aislamiento y luego son los mismos que cuidan en las otras unidades que hasta ahora no ha habido casos  pero sabemos que esto es una bomba de tiempo.

Puedo ver también la ambulancia varias veces en el dia y a los detenido en Alfa  que se llevan ya no regresan.  El único edificio que no tiene contagiados por el COVID 19 es el edificio de Bravo pero estamos en alto riesgo de contagiarnos ya que en estos momentos hay muy poco personal para cuidarnos en nuestros tanques y las mismas personas que nos cuidan, en el horario que corresponde  realizar la cuenta a los detenidos, van y realizan la cuenta a los demás en el edificio que tienen personas contagiadas, no usando la protección necesaria para la prevención de la propagación de la enfermedad y luego retornan nuevamente a nuestro edificio, donde estamos expuestos al contagio de esta terrible enfermedad.  Existimos personas vulnerables al contagio de dicha enfermedad. Los procesos son muy lentos, existen personas que ya han ganado sus casos y pueden ser puestos en libertad y sin embargo siguen bajo custodia aquí en el centro de detención.

La alimentación es extremadamente pobre, su calidad y cantidad es pésima,  Todos los detenidos tememos por nuestras vidas, tenemos mucho miedo de ser infectados por esta enfermedad.  Por estos motivos le supicamos por favor nos ayuden.  Se dice que hay más de 50 guardias contagiados positivo y otro tanto sospechosos de ser afectados por el COVID 19.
